SOLAS QUARTET

Fresh and innovative

The Solas Quartet is an exciting new string quartet that first came together during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its four members - Katherine Hunka, Maria Gaynor, Cian O’Duill and Aoife Nic Athloaich - are busy chamber musicians and educators, performing with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Irish Baroque Orchestra, amongst others, as well as all being lecturers at the MTU Cork School of Music.

Realising they shared common musical goals, they set out to research and present fresh and innovative programmes. So far, concerts have included music by Irish, African-American, female, transgender, 20th and 21st century composers, as well as compositions and arrangements by members of the quartet themselves.

The Solas Quartet have undertaken three National Tours for the National String Quartet Foundation, a lockdown recording at Cork’s Triskel Arts Centre for broadcast in December 2020, as well as a guest appearance on RTÉ's The Tommy Tiernan Show in February 2023.
